We recently returned from an 19 day/18 night tour of the North and South Islands with Moa Trek. We loved the experience! New Zealand itself is stunning. Moa Trek - which we had heard about from a friend of a friend - exceeded my expectations. It is a small group tour - maximum 18 people - and everyone was very friendly. Our driver/guide Paul did an excellent job and was a lot of fun besides. I thought the itinerary was very good. You can take some of the add-on excursions if you want, but for the most part we found plenty to do just sticking to the things included on the tour. The one extra we did really enjoy was the Maori dinner and entertainment in Rotorua. Hotels were good, often suites, and two even included a washer and dryer in our rooms.
We took the Kiwi 14 day tour and we loved it. Everything went well. Our driver/guide Paul was very friendly, courteous and helpful. The tour locations were well-chosen and the timings were good.
Our pre-tour experience with the booking process also was good. The information we were provided was very accurate.
We highly recommend this tour.
MoaTrek Tours is an awesome way to experience New Zealand! Small groups, knowledgeable guides, off the beaten track destinations. We loved every minute of our Kiwi tour, and highly recommend this company!
I had always wanted to visit New Zealand and liked the idea of a small group itinerary showing me the highlights. What Moa Trek and M (our guide) provided was a perfect holiday. Thank you for a memorable trip
I went on the Kiwi 14 Day Tour and would HIGHLY recommend Moatrek to anyone wanting to see New Zealand and not do the driving themselves. I feel we were able to go to a lot of places that one of those big buses would never be able to do. The small-group concept is the best.
We booked the 14-day Kiwi tour to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary, and the trip far surpassed our expectations. Matt was an excellent guide with tons of information and a great sense of humor. Every day was a wonderful adventure, and we would be hard pressed to pick a favorite (although Aoraki Mt. Cook and Milford Sound would be real contenders for first place). We knew it would be a busy trip, with many early morning starts, so we were mentally prepared for that. The extra excursions we took (zlpline canopy tour, glacier tour, jetboat ride) all were terrific and we established new friendships with our traveling companions. As you can tell, we can hardly stop talking about how great NZ and MoaTrek are!
I booked the full 23 day tour and it was simply wonderful! It met all my hopes and dreams for my "holiday of a lifetime" and I'm very demanding normally!
The tour was extremely well organised from beginning to end which is saying a lot when you consider 23 days of driving, visiting places and hotel rooms for us all - a logistical nightmare that they handled with aplomb.
There were between 7 and 12 people on the trip (some did shorter itineraries) and this was just perfect as there was none of the hanging around and problems that you get with larger groups.
Our driver, Andre, was entertaining and informative and represented Moa Trek very well.
I would definitely recommend spending extra money to go on a small group tour with these guys!
Hard to fault anything on our Moatrek trip and we certainly saw and learnt a great deal with plenty of fun on the way. We'd certainly recommend the experience to anyone and we'd be confident that they'd enjoy it as much as we did. Hard also to pick out highlights, but if pushed, the included light aircraft flight from Te Anau back to Queenstown and the only sad thing was having to miss Kaikoura due to storm damage issues on the access road. Well done to you all at Moatrek
Bob and I came here for the trip of a lifetime and that's just what we got and more. We fell in love with New Zealand through the eyes of our fabulous guide, Em. She was so knowledgeable, energetic, funny and a fantastic story teller. Oh, and she was a good driver, too. Our group was wonderful and we felt like we were leaving family at the end. Each day we said this was the highlight of the trip and then we would say the same thing the next day. And you know each day was just another day in paradise. Loved it.
Absolutely fantastic tour. Our guide Paul was the best - great sense of humor, and really knowledgeable about all things Kiwi. I agree with Jackie that it was a great group of people. The size of the group is perfect. When they say luxury, they mean it! All of the accomodations were top-notch. Thank you Moatrek.
This trip exceeded all of our expectations! Em was a fabulous tour leader. She was so knowledgeable and we loved her stories about growing up in this beautiful country. I can’t imagine that we would gotten to experience all of the wonderful activities that we participated in if we had done this trip on our own. Great weather, great people, great memories!
The Tour and New Zealand was awesome. Thanks to Em for being such an excellent Kiwi guide.
MoaTrek gets it! Unique locations. Local, fun adventures. Varied and superb scenery. Small groups. We have 2 days left and we're having such a wonderful time. New Zealand is simply marvelous. We were able to see, experience and enjoy so many different sights in such a short time. Our guide, Brent de Jorgh is doing a great job in showing us around, explaining the culture and telling interesting stories. Brent always remained cheerful, answered our questions patiently and made sure everybody felt included and got the most of the trip. Thank you so much, Brent. You've made our NZ trip one we will always remember. Best from Greg & Anna
Just got back from a 23 day trip around New Zealand and one of my best holidays ever. Paul our guide was the best he was so kind, helpful and very very knowledgeable not only on NZ but everything. The country is so lovely people are great and moaTrek make everything run like clock work. So nice to be in a small family group made some friends and I can’t recommend it enough. Only problem is I now have 6,000 photoes to sort out!!!!
Small tours are the way to go especially when you have Matt for a driver, making history Come Alive! Of course you need to take his great sense of humor with a couple of grains of salt... Wish we could have done the whole 28 days, but had to be content with 14 fully packed days of sight seeing and immersion into Kiwis (fruit, bird & 2 legged kinds). Take an extra day to go see Hobbiton - awesome place. My main complaint - my suitcase was underweight! I did not do a good job of supporting the NZ economy! Spectacular scenery, friendly people, great weather, really good beer & flat white coffee. What's not to love? Many thanks! October 2017
What an amazing adventure !! My return to the South Island 20 years later with MoaTrek ... yes , 20 ! What did I experience ? A lovely group , extraordinary MoaTrek guide "M " - who was funny , knowledgeable and creative and my multilayered sheep family and friends . Not to mention an exquisite / seamless coordination of travel adventures, lovely hotel settings and a deeper cultural understanding . The overriding intention ? " enjoy every moment " ! Brilliant !!! Thank you for providing me a magical reunion with NZ ! As M says , " We're so jolly lucky ! "
I had absolutely no experience with group tours but now I am pretty sure my standards are set high because of MoaTrek. Everything was great: accommodation, coffee stops, lunches, activities, New Zealand’s scenery, the guide (Marilyn), and the other people on tour. It is the perfect variety of more active and relaxing activities ranging from kayaking to enjoying a cruise. The best thing is you can choose while on tour what kind of activity you want to do. I totally recommend MoaTrek and the 23 day Kakapo tour as it is the perfect way to see all of beautiful New Zealand.
Had a wonderful time on the tour. Our group was great very friendly, well traveled and mostly willing to share their adventures to other countries and give their advice.
Loved the small group of travelers..feel it made for a better tour.
Our tour guide was great but was new to the company. He did his best to let us know about places and what there was to do on our stops. The tour company was wonderful and would go with them again.
Moa Trek was the best. Awesome guide and driver. Great accommodations.
Sight seeing was well planed out with excellent sights. Recommended optional trips were great with exception of Maiori dinner and show which was so so. The only improvement to be made would have been to go on the three week trip!
Had a fabulous time on the 23 day Kakapo tour (mid January-mid February 2017). Nice variety of cultural and historical experiences, unbelievable scenery with many walks and boat rides in unique natural settings. Our Kiwi guide, Andrew was delightful--very informative and personable. Had a great group of co-travelers which made the entire experience one of our best holidays ever. Do not hesitate to book with MoaTrek and really see this beautiful country!
We did the 23 day tour over Christmas and new year of both islands. It was FANTASTIC. (It was very tiring, thoug, being rather 'full on'. If you have to option you could take a break in the middle!). The tour is small group and expertly guided and covers a wide range of subject areas and experiences. New Zealand is a fascinating place and this tour shows it to advantage. I totally recommend it.
Folks!!!!! Listen. This was our third trip to New Zealand. Moatrek was Fabulous. Accommodations! Adventure! Culture! Hikes! Dolphins! Glaciers! Wine! Suspended bridges! Water rapids! kayaking! Maori! Trip of a lifetime ! Great guide! Safe and knowledgeable!!!! We did 3 weeks. Oh my!!!! Do it!!!!! We took our whole family of 5!
We took the first ever MoaTrek winter tour of the South Island, and we loved it! Although it was winter in NZ, the landscapes were stunning! We especially loved the snowy mountains and waterfalls. Also, because of the winter season, we were the only tourists in many places. For example, we could take photos in peace, go kayaking in the Blue Lagoon with no one else in sight and drive around the countryside on empty roads. We were lucky with the weather and with proper clothing the chilliness wasn't a problem. Our guide Matt was very professional, among other things he told about NZ's history, agriculture and geography (with a sense of humour ). The hotels, special lunches and activities included were superbe! We thoroughly enjoyed the well-organised tour and would recommend it to everybody interested in NZ!
Best regards, Hanna and Heidi
My wife and I researched small group tours in NZ for weeks and noticed the consistently high marks for Moatrek. After doing the April 4th 22 day Kakapo tour we could see why and were completely happy. We handled everything by email with them and no question was too much trouble. The itinerary, the accommodations, the extra booked excursions and our fantastic guide/driver Matt were all fabulous. Beautiful scenery everywhere as evidenced by my 2000+ photos. History, culture and geography all explained by Matt. We got to most stops before the huge busses arrived and could get into many stops and viewpoints they couldn't. Plenty of well timed rest/coffee breaks. The hotel room keys put right into your hands and baggage put right in your rooms by hotel staff or brought to you by Matt. Vouchers and/or tickets all ready for attractions, etc. Thank you for a great trip Moatrek, one we will not forget !
I visited NZ with MoaTrek, kakapo tour 2014 January, and was thrilled by the beauty of NZ, the fabulous hotels, the guides giving precious informationen about their lovely country, everything was fabulously organised! We all had a great time, enjoyed every day! I often think back and might go there for another visit! Regards from Switzerland, Beatrice Obrecht
Okay. You ruined it for me. I will never want to consider a large group tour after our amazing 22 day, Kakapo tour with MoaTrek. Every aspect was great: logistics, pace, accommodations, special activities, our guide (Richard), and the itinerary. We got to scenic stops no large bus could and even coffee breaks were often unique at quirky local places that could never have handled large groups.
I wondered when we booked the tour if 22 days would be too much. Looking back, I actually wish we would've had MORE time. The tour and the country were that spectacular.
