Sustainable New Zealand Tours with MoaTrek

At MoaTrek, we believe travel should not only be about exploring beautiful places but also about caring for them. New Zealand is our home, and we feel privileged to share it with our guests. That’s why sustainability and respect for our land, people, and wildlife are woven into everything we do.

Being a family-owned company, sharing New Zealand since 1971, we understand the importance of looking after the places we love. Our small group tours (maximum of 18 travellers) mean a lighter footprint and a more personal, connected travel experience.

Department of Conservation approved concessionaire

Exploring New Zealand’s National Parks Sustainably

As an official Department of Conservation concessionaire, this means we are audited and licensed to operate in New Zealand’s National Parks with the utmost care and respect. We meet strict environmental standards, travel safely, and ensure that our time in these treasured landscapes helps preserve them for future generations.

Our Kakapo tour gets off the beaten track into 8 National Parks and 2 UNESCO world heritage sites. This includes the inspiring peak in Aoraki / Mt Cook National Park and the majesty of Milford Sound in the Fiordland National Park.

Sparky the Kiwi

Supporting New Zealand Wildlife Conservation

One of the highlights of our Kakapo Tour is visiting the Whangarei Native Bird Recovery Centre. MoaTrek proudly sponsors this wonderful organisation, which rescues and rehabilitates injured native birds.

Here, our travellers meet amazing locals like Sparky the Kiwi and learn first-hand about the incredible conservation work being done to protect New Zealand’s unique birdlife. For many guests, this is a truly unforgettable experience.

Tiaki's Promise logo

The Tiaki Promise – Travel Responsibly in New Zealand

We proudly support the Tiaki Promise, a nationwide initiative encouraging visitors to care for New Zealand, its people, and its culture. By travelling with MoaTrek, you’ll join us in this shared commitment to tread lightly, travel safely, and leave nothing but footprints for future generations.

We utilise indigenous owned and operated businesses where possible as part of this promise. In the first few days of your Kakapo tour, you will visit several of these when enjoying locally guided experiences of the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, Kawiti Glow worm Caves, Manea – Footprints of Kupe and Tane Mahuta.

Here at MoaTrek, we have a Sustainability Action Plan to monitor and manage ongoing improvements to our sustainability as a company.
