Three senior travellers on the beach in Abel Tasman National Park, New Zealand

A Day Out in Abel Tasman – Senior Traveller Stories with MoaTrek

Abel Tasman National Park is one of the most popular spots in New Zealand for senior travellers – the sparkling ocean, golden beaches, great walking and an easy-going pace that really suits the over-50s and older travellers. In this article, we introduce a day out in Abel Tasman through the eyes (and cameras!) of guests on our New Zealand tours for senior travellers.

Kia ora! We’re MoaTrek and we’ve been hosting travellers on our New Zealand small group tours since 1971. Every year we show lots of guests just like you all around the country on our tours and we’ve learned what works best for seniors: small, friendly groups; well-paced travel; all the scenic highlights; lots of fun activities; comfortable accommodation and expert guides who know all the best spots.

Many of our travellers tell us that visiting Abel Tasman was one of the very best days of their whole New Zealand trip! Read on and we’ll walk you through the day, and share real photos, little video moments and stories from senior travellers, so you can get a true feel for what it’s like to spend a day in Abel Tasman with MoaTrek.

Visiting Abel Tasman with MoaTrek

We start the day in Nelson, with a gentle easing into the adventure – coffee in hand, a friendly chat on the coach and that little buzz of excitement when you know something special is on the way.

As we roll out towards Abel Tasman National Park, you’ll see orchards, the glittering waters of Tasman Bay with Abel Tasman in the distance, you’ll hear a few local stories from your guide, while you relax in your seat, knowing a coastal cruise, a day walk on the famous Abel Tasman Coastal Track and some downtime on the beach afterwards are all lined up for the day.

What does a day out in Abel Tasman with MoaTrek look like?

Cruising the Abel Tasman Coast – Emerald Water, Golden Bays & Wildlife

From Kaiteriteri, we step straight from the sand onto the boat – no rushing, no jostling crowds; we take our time to find our spots on deck or inside the cabin. The skipper eases us out of the bay and, just like that, Abel Tasman starts to unfold around us. Golden coves slip by one after another, emerald water lapping at the sand, bush-covered hills rising gently behind.

The best part? The boat does all the work while you sit back with your camera, letting the scenery roll past like a slow, peaceful movie.

Not long into the cruise, there’s a little ripple of excitement on board. “Look there – seals!” someone calls, and we all lean towards the rail. We’re passing Tonga Island, home to a New Zealand fur seal colony, and sure enough there they are – a sleepy-looking bull sprawled on the rocks, a pup tumbling into the water after its mates, with seabirds wheeling overhead and the odd splash from dolphins or little blue penguins nearby.

You don’t have to hike for hours to see wildlife here; from the comfort of the boat you can zoom in, snap a few photos and simply enjoy the show.

While you’re taking it all in, the skipper’s on the mic with a friendly, informative commentary – telling us all about the landscape, wildlife and little bits of local history as we go. Your MoaTrek guide is there too, adding stories, answering questions and giving that bit of personal attention if you need a hand with anything.

The boat is nice and spacious, with room to relax inside or wander out onto the open deck; some people are happy to stay in their seats, but we love getting everyone outside for those big, wide coastal views. It’s all very comfortable, and if you do want to move around, your guides are right there to lend an arm and make sure you feel steady on your feet.

A Perfect Day in Abel Tasman

It’s hard to explain how beautiful Abel Tasman is in words, so here’s a short video from one of our Kiwi Guides during our walk recently. It was just us in this magical spot!

MoaTrek Traveller Review – I loved the day out in Abel Tasman

“I loved the Abel Tasman – the day out on the boat, hiking, swimming in the sea, the stunning beaches and colours. MoaTrek offers fabulous accommodation picked for some of the greatest locations, and uses small and local tour companies to give you a more off-grid and personal experience than the mainstream coach tours!”

MoaTrek Abel Tasman Travel Tip – Layer Up for the Boat Cruise

Mornings out on the water can be a bit cool, even on blue-sky days, so I always suggest a light jacket or extra layer for the cruise. You can peel it off once the sun warms up, but you’ll be glad of it when that fresh sea breeze kicks in on the way out from Kaiteriteri.

Walking in Abel Tasman - barefoot on the beach or birdsong in the forest

When the boat noses into Awaroa Inlet and the ramp drops onto the sand, we’ve got choices. Some travellers decide straight away that this golden beach is their happy place and set up camp with a book and their toes in the water.

For us, we’re off to walk from Awaroa Inlet to Tonga Quarry – it’s around 5 km (3 miles) on one of New Zealand’s most famous coastal walks. The walk is always one of the highlights of the whole trip, and we take it at an easy pace, with plenty of breaks and time to enjoy the views.

We start with a break on the beach at Awaroa, sitting in the sun or under the shade of the trees while we sort out our gear and chat about the fun we’ve had on the trip so far. There’s always a bit of laughter, a few stories traded, and without fail someone leans back, looks around and says, “This is the life!”

When we’re ready, we lace up our walking shoes (or sling them over a shoulder for a few barefoot steps along the sand) and head off along the Abel Tasman Coastal Track with our local guide leading the way and your MoaTrek guide bringing up the rear.

The track is well-formed: a little climbing as we go up over the Tonga Saddle, then a gentle descent back down towards the sea, with birdsong in the bush and glimpses of bright blue water through the trees. In some places we’re right down near the shoreline, close enough to hear the waves on the sand; in others we’re higher up, looking down on little coves and golden beaches that feel a world away. We stop often to catch our breath, enjoy the lookouts and take photos – there’s no rush.

By the time we wander down onto the sand at Tonga Quarry to meet the boat again, most people are grinning the same way: “I wasn’t sure I could do it,” they say, “but I’m so glad I did.”

What did our guests say about walking in Abel Tasman?

“The guide in Abel Tasman was informative and the hike was excellent, especially the unexpected bonus of walking through the water to get to the other side of the bay! What a wonderful adventure.”

MoaTrek Abel Tasman Travel Tip – Pack comfortable shoes

The track from Awaroa to Tonga Quarry is well-formed and nice to walk, but you’ll enjoy it most in comfortable, sturdy walking shoes or boots with good grip. Lots of us love to slip our shoes off for a few barefoot stretches along the sand too – just make sure you can pop them back on easily when we head back into the bush.

Ali, MoaTrek Kiwi Guide.

Back to Kaiteriteri for ice cream on the beach

By the time we stroll down onto the sand at Tonga Quarry, there’s that lovely mix of tired legs and big smiles. We hop back on the boat, find our favourite spots and let the coastline slide past one more time. The sun’s a bit lower now, the light softer, and there’s a gentle quiet on board – the kind that comes after a day well spent. Some of us lean back with a cold drink, others stand at the rail looking out for dolphins or seabirds, just enjoying the feeling of, “Yep, we really did that.”

Back in Kaiteriteri, we say a warm goodbye to our local Abel Tasman guide. They’ve walked every step with us, pointed out birds and bays, helped over the steeper bits and shared stories about life here – meeting people like this is one of the things our travellers love most about touring New Zealand with MoaTrek.

Then it’s time for one last treat: a wander along the beach, maybe shoes off in the sand, and an ice cream in hand while we chat and laugh about the day.

Watching everyone sitting on the wall or the sand at Kaiteriteri, swapping photos and favourite moments, you can see it written all over their faces – a real sense of achievement, and a memory that’s going to stick long after we’re back in Nelson for the evening.

MoaTrek traveller review – New Zealand has been at the top of my list for 35 years

“A trip to New Zealand has been at the top of my bucket list for 35 years so I had high expectations. This tour exceeded all of them, plus some.

Our guide, the accommodation, stunning views, cultural exposure and education especially regarding the Maori and NZ environment. We visited Milford Sound, glowworm caves, thermal pools, swam in lakes, hiked in Abel Tasman, flew over glaciers with our international group of fellow travellers. Honestly, every day was more fabulous than the previous.

The only downside was having to return home. I will treasure the memories of New Zealand forever. I wish my kids could have been with me.”

MoaTrek Abel Tasman Travel Tip – Pack your swimming togs

If you’re even half-thinking about a paddle or swim, pop your togs in your day bag. The water can be beautifully tempting, and lots of our over-50 travellers end up wading or having a quick dip once they see those golden beaches – it’s the best way to cool off after the walk.

Chris, MoaTrek Kiwi Guide.

Abel Tasman is always one of our best days on tour

Back at our hotel in Nelson that evening, as you sit on the bed with a cuppa, flicking through your photos on your phone, you’ll be smiling. In one day, Abel Tasman gives us more than we ever expected: crystal-clear water; golden beaches; bush tracks; seals and dolphins; and a real sense that adventure doesn’t have an age limit.

Everyone always says the same thing: “That’s a day we’ll be talking about for a long time.”
