Southern Alps Scenic Flights & Glacier Landings

Locations: Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park (Tasman Glacier); West Coast (Franz Josef Glacier); Milford Sound ↔ Queenstown

Type of Activity: Scenic flights with glacier landings, heli-hikes & fixed-wing alpine routes

This one’s the show-stopper. You’ll lift off over deep valleys and swing past snow-capped ridgelines before touching down on ancient glacier ice — the kind of Southern Alps scenery that has everyone reaching for the camera at once. Our guests love how smooth and well-hosted these flights are: big windows for photos, friendly pilots pointing out the best angles, and plenty of time to soak it all in.

Flight Options Available

  • Aoraki/Mt Cook & Tasman Glacier (Heli or Ski-plane): Choose classic scenic flights with a snow landing or go bigger with a Tasman Glacier Heli Hike or Snow landing. The ice landscapes are magical for photographers.
  • Franz Josef Glacier (West Coast): Shorter and longer helicopter flights over the glacier and surrounding peaks, with the option to land on snow. There’s also a Franz Josef Glacier Heli-Hike if you’d like time on the ice with a guide.
  • Milford Sound Flights (Queenstown ↔ Milford): Fixed-wing scenic flights paired with a cruise (Fly–Cruise–Fly or Coach–Cruise–Fly). It’s the most relaxing way to see the fiords, waterfalls and alpine scenery in one day — flying back from Milford also cuts down driving time.

Why it works for seniors: Comfortable aircraft, gentle boarding with crew assistance, and a pace that prioritises views and storytelling. If you’d rather keep it easy, skip the heli-hike and simply enjoy a scenic landing for photos — we’ll help you pick the best option.

Good to know: Flights are weather dependent and operators may shift departure times/routes to find the best conditions. Glacier landings and heli-hikes require good mobility for stepping on and off the aircraft and walking on snow/ice. Tell us if you prefer a photo-focused ride — we’ll aim for the prettiest light.

What Our Travellers Said About Scenic Flights

“We thoroughly enjoyed the entire trip, and really enjoyed the small plane flights around Mt Cook and from Milford Sound back to Queenstown”

— Larry, Kiwi 12-day South Island tour, March 2024

Whether you’re touching down on the Tasman, skimming the Franz névé, or flying back from Milford Sound over the highest passes, this is pure Southern Alps magic — a traveller favourite that fits perfectly into our Queenstown stay.

Lord of the Rings Tours – Queenstown

Location: Queenstown, Glenorchy & Paradise (Wakatipu Basin), South Island

Type of Activity: Small-group film-location tour with epic scenery, costumes/props & photo stops

Local guides take you along the lakeshore to Glenorchy and into Paradise, sharing filming stories, pointing out exact scene locations, and helping with fun photos using replica swords and cloaks. It’s relaxed, small-group and very Queenstown: big views, easy stops, plenty of time for pictures and a good yarn.

Tour Options Available

  • Half-Day Lord of the Rings Scenic Tour: Small groups in comfy 4WD vehicles, multiple filming locations (e.g., Isengard outlook, Lothlorien beech forest, Ithilien/12 Mile), photo stops, morning or afternoon tea, optional dress-up with props.
  • Full-Day Lord of the Rings Tour: Combines the half-day with additional locations and scenic spots for a deeper dive into the Glenorchy/Paradise area; more time for photos, stories and exploring.

Good to know: Accommodation pick-ups are available from selected Queenstown stops. Tours include drinks/snacks, interpretation material, and friendly guidance at an easy pace — great for senior travellers.

What Our Travellers Said About Lord of the Rings Tours

“Some of the optional trips that we would recommend are the helicopter flight with snow landing and the Glenorchy Lord of the Rings tour and the Dart River excursion. Each of these provided some of most beautiful views we have ever seen.”

— Donna, Kakapo 21-day tour, April 2025

Your spoilt for choice in Queenstown, but our guests love these outings because they’re light on the legs but big on views, storytelling and magic.

Common Questions about what to do in New Zealand from Senior Travellers

  • Are these activities okay for senior travellers?
Yes, they all are. Look for short, flat walks, seated boat or coach options, and operators who clearly explain accessibility. Tell us your comfort level and we’ll steer you to the easy wins.
  • What’s the best season for being outdoors?
Summer has long days, autumn is calm and great for photos, winter brings snow-capped scenery, and spring is fresh and green. You can enjoy outdoor activities all year in New Zealand.
  • Do I need to drive?
No. Plenty of tours include hotel pick-ups or shuttles — ideal on winding scenic roads. We’ll book transfers so you can enjoy the views, not the parking.
  • What should I wear or bring?
Layers, a light rain jacket, comfy closed-toe shoes, sun hat and sunscreen. For water or cave trips, the specialist gear is usually provided — just bring your sense of adventure.
  • Are activities weather-dependent?
Some are, especially boats and flights. If conditions aren’t right, operators will shift the time or date.
  • Any bugs or wildlife to worry about?
No snakes here. In some spots you’ll meet cheeky sandflies — a dab of repellent and light sleeves does the trick.
  • Is tipping expected?
No pressure. Tipping isn’t mandatory in New Zealand, but it’s appreciated for great service.
  • Will my phone work?
Good coverage in towns and cities; patchier reception in remote areas. Most hotels, cafés and visitor centres have Wi-Fi.
  • How many things should I book in a day?
One main activity per day is perfect. Don’t try to pack too much in — you’ll have time for photo stops, a cuppa, and a yarn with your guide without watching the clock.

MoaTrek Travel Tip – How to find the best activities for your New Zealand trip?

  • Check the fitness level required: Look for “short walk/easy” vs. more demanding grades and pick what suits your mobility and confidence.
  • Confirm transport: See if hotel pick-ups or shuttles are included so you don’t need to drive or navigate unfamiliar roads.
  • Know the gear: Check what’s provided (e.g., jackets, boots, safety gear) and what you need to bring (layers, sun protection, water).
  • Read traveller reviews: Scan recent reviews for notes on pacing, guide support, accessibility and comfort—especially useful for seniors.
  • Pick the right season: Match activities to weather and daylight—summer for long days, autumn for calmer conditions, winter/spring for alpine scenery.
  • Don’t try to pack too much into one day:  New Zealand’s roads are often hilly, narrow and winding, so even short distances can take longer than you’d expect.
